With all due respect to Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni is the National Poet of our time. I had no interest in "unmasculine" poetry until I heard Nikki Giovanni read poetry in NYC. As the last in line, I met her at a book signing, shook her hand & told her that a knucklehead white boy was transformed by an African-American genius and visionary. She laughed when I told her, "This is a great day!" She was on her way home to have a beer & watch ESPN Sports Center at 11:00.
